Moving to Portugal: more than just moving

🇬🇧  I talk to people who are thinking about moving to Portugal almost every day. Some are coming for work, for family, and others simply because they fell in love with the idea of building a different life here. I completely understand why. The sunny afternoons, the ocean, the food, the slower rhythm. Portugal has a lot to love.

Relocating is much more than finding a house, organizing documents, packing your life into boxes, and flying to your destination. It is about learning how your new everyday life works.

Going to the local pastelaria, talking to your neighbours, understanding someone at the bank, making an appointment, asking a question without immediately reaching for your phone to translate it. They seem like very small things, but when everything around you is new, they can make such a difference.

I see this with my students all the time. Speaking even a little Portuguese gives you a different kind of independence. You start having conversations you probably wouldn’t have had before and slowly understanding the little habits and traditions around you.

It starts becoming part of your life.

You definitely don’t need perfect Portuguese to move here. But if Portugal is somewhere you would like to call home, learning the language is a beautiful way to start feeling closer to it.

🇵🇹 Quase todos os dias falo com pessoas que estão a pensar mudar-se para Portugal. Algumas vêm por motivos profissionais, outras por motivos familiares e outras simplesmente porque se apaixonaram pela ideia de construir uma vida diferente aqui. Compreendo perfeitamente o porquê. As tardes ensolaradas, o mar, a gastronomia, o ritmo mais calmo. Há muito para se adorar em Portugal.

Mudar-se é muito mais do que encontrar uma casa, organizar documentos, empacotar toda a sua vida em caixas e apanhar um avião para o seu destino. Trata-se de aprender como funciona o seu novo dia-a-dia.

Ir à pastelaria local, conversar com os vizinhos, compreender o que alguém diz no banco, marcar uma consulta, fazer uma pergunta sem recorrer imediatamente ao telemóvel para traduzir. Parecem coisas muito pequenas, mas quando tudo à tua volta é novo, podem fazer toda a diferença.

Vejo isto constantemente com os meus alunos. Falar, mesmo que seja só um pouco de português, dá-te um tipo diferente de independência. Começas a ter conversas que provavelmente não terias tido antes e, aos poucos, vais compreendendo os pequenos hábitos e tradições à tua volta.

Começa a fazer parte da tua vida.

Não precisas, de forma alguma, de saber português na perfeição para te mudares para cá. Mas se Portugal é um lugar que gostarias de chamar de lar, aprender a língua é uma forma maravilhosa de começares a sentir-te mais próximo deste país.
