Pronunciation Tips for European Portuguese Learners
Olá a todos! Aqui é a Anita.
๐ฌ๐ง One of the biggest challenges when learning European Portuguese is pronunciation.
Many of you tell me they can read a sentence, but they don't feel confident saying it out loud. The good news is that once you know a few pronunciation patterns, everything starts to make much more sense!
Here are my top 5 tips for you:
- Not every letter is pronounced
Unlike many languages, European Portuguese often "swallows" sounds. Some vowels become very soft or almost disappear, especially in the middle of a word.
- Nasal sounds matter
You'll often see ã, õ, or words ending in -em and -ão. These sounds come through your nose rather than your mouth, and they give Portuguese its distinctive rhythm.
- Pay attention when vowels meet
When one word ends in a vowel and the next one begins with another, native speakers usually connect the sounds instead of saying each word separately. This makes spoken Portuguese sound much smoother.
- The same letter doesn't always make the same sound
Letters like s, x, and r can change their pronunciation depending on where they appear in the word. Learning these patterns is much more helpful than trying to memorize every word individually.
- Listen for the rhythm, not just the words
Portuguese has its own melody. Instead of focusing on each individual sound, try listening to complete sentences and imitate the rhythm and intonation. That's one of the fastest ways to sound more natural.
Pronunciation takes practice. Listen before you repeat. Don't expect every letter to be pronounced. Pay attention to how sounds connect. And most importantly, speak out loud whenever you can.
Little by little, your ears become sharper and your mouth becomes more comfortable with the sounds.

A pronúncia requer prática. Ouve antes de repetires. Não esperes que todas as letras sejam pronunciadas. Presta atenção à forma como os sons se ligam entre si. E, acima de tudo, fala em voz alta sempre que puderes.
Pouco a pouco, os teus ouvidos ficam mais apurados e a tua boca fica mais à vontade com os sons.
Até breve,
